Power Meters

Power meters come in three main form factors: pedal-based, crank-based, and spider-based. Pedal-based units are the most portable and can be swapped between bikes easily, while crank and spider-based options offer a more integrated fit for riders with a dedicated race or training bike. Each type measures wattage output in a slightly different location on the drivetrain, but all deliver reliable power data to a compatible cycling computer or app.

Power meters are used by a wide range of cyclists, from competitive racers and triathletes through to dedicated amateur riders following structured training plans. If you train with specific goals in mind, such as improving your threshold power or pacing efforts during events, a power meter can provide meaningful data regardless of your level. They are most valuable when paired with a training plan or coaching program that uses power zones to guide your workouts.

Compatibility depends on the form factor you choose and your existing drivetrain setup. Pedal-based power meters require a compatible pedal threading standard, while crank and spider-based units need to match your bottom bracket and chainring configuration. Before purchasing, check your current crank arm length, bottom bracket type, and the number of chainring bolts to ensure the unit will fit your bike correctly.

Single-sided power meters measure the output from one leg only, typically the left, and double the reading to estimate total power. Dual-sided units measure each leg independently, giving you a true left-right power balance reading. For most riders, single-sided options offer excellent training value at a lower price point, while dual-sided units suit those who want to identify and address leg imbalances or require the highest level of data accuracy.

A power meter transmits data via ANT+ or Bluetooth to a compatible cycling computer or smartphone app. To make the most of your power data, you will need a head unit that can display and record wattage in real time, such as a Garmin or similar cycling computer. Many riders also use training platforms like Zwift to analyse their power data in depth, track fitness progression, and structure workouts around key metrics such as functional threshold power. To get meaningful results, it is recommended to establish your baseline numbers through an FTP test, which allows training zones to be set accurately and effort levels to be properly calibrated.
